Sherfield School makes history!

    24 June 2022

On the back of their sensational victory at the Independent Schools Golf Association (ISGA) National Finals at Radley College last week, Sherfield’s Golf Team travelled to The Warwickshire Golf and Country Club on Tuesday 21st June to take part in the HG Trophy. The HG Trophy is the Premier ISGA One Day Stroke Play Championship and is open to Boy and Girl Amateur Golfers who attend an Independent School and are under the age of 19.

In perfect conditions for golf once more, Albie and Fred in Year 8, Dylan in Year 9 and Freddie in Year 10 tackled the picturesque King’s Couse which is extremely long and unforgiving. The field included over 120 players, many of whom were significantly older and had handicaps ranging from +3 – 9. However, all four boys stepped up to the challenge and produced breathtaking displays of golf to card gross scores of 72 (Albie), 76 (Freddie), 78 (Fred) and 84 (Dylan) respectively. After teeing off relatively early in the day and establishing the Clubhouse Lead, the Sherfield Team endured a nervous wait as the rest of the scores slowly came in.

Remarkably, and for the first time in the long and decorated history of the HG Trophy, a single school claimed all of the prizes in the Championship. With a combined total of 148 (Albie and Freddie), Sherfield took the team gross accolade by 1 shot from The Perse School (149) in second place and 2 shots from Rossall School (150) in third. In addition, the boys also came on top in the team nett standings with an impressive score of 136 (Albie and Fred), which was a full 5 shots clear of their nearest challengers, Reed’s School and New Hall School who both posted identical totals of 141.

Alongside the team achievements, Albie posted the best score of the day and subsequently won the individual gross competition with a level par round of 72. Furthermore, this ensured that he finished top of the individual nett standings with score of 66 (-6). The other members of Sherfield’s Golf Team also enjoyed days to remember as Freddie finished 12th in the gross competition (76), Fred (70) 5th on the nett leaderboard and Dylan 11th (71) in the 120 strong field.

David Quin, who has been running the ISGA for over 15 years, confirmed that Albie at 12 years old is the youngest ever winner of the individual gross competition. He also stated that Sherfield’s Golf Team had the lowest combined age of any previous winners of the HG Trophy. To put their performance into perspective, the boys joined pupils from Bedford School, Halliford School, Wellington College, Whitgift School, Birkdale School, Repton School, Reed’s School, Claires Court and Sherbourne School as victors in the largest and most prestigious ISGA One Day Stroke Play Championship on the calendar. Indeed, Sherfield’s Golf Team consistently continue to outperform some of the largest Independent Schools in the UK and are now regarded as one of the leading members of the ISGA. However, most importantly, the boys continue to be role models for their fellow Sherfield School pupils off the course in terms of their integrity, humility, perseverance and hard work. We could not be prouder of them.
