Food & Nutrition

At Sherfield school, we know that nutritious and delicious food is key to each child’s wellbeing.

Napoleon believed ‘an army marches on its stomach’, which is why we put such an emphasis on high quality, delicious food to provide the energy that drives our pupils and staff.

We have breakfast options every day of the week with a brunch on Sundays. This includes a selection of everyday items as well as a smoothie of the day, pastry and toast stations, cereal and yoghurt bars and a hydration station.

We have bespoke lunch and dinner menus for hot meals, salad options, a packed lunch offer and desserts.

We celebrate special festivals such as Thanksgiving and St Patrick’s Day with themed meals and have regular tasting days where we celebrate a particular ingredient.

We are a nut-aware school and can cater to students with other allergies and food intolerances.

We work with specialist contract catering company Thomas Franks, a leading independent school caterer who make sure that all our food is locally sourced. They only source red tractor British meat and sustainable fish that is MSC certified. They endeavour to buy British fruit and vegetables where possible. They support Fair Trade products to ensure a fair deal for growers. Their milk and cream is supplied by British farmers and they only use free-range eggs.

Part of the way they encourage healthy eating is to provide beautifully cooked food with plenty of variety and fresh fruit and vegetables.

"My boys absolutely love the food on offer at Sherfield. They love the themed days, the pasta bar, the variety of hot meals the salad bar and say the choice is incredible. It is a point of conversation daily what they have had for lunch at school."

Exciting New Food and Sustainability Updates at Sherfield

We’re delighted to share a number of positive updates to our school menus, all aimed at supporting student wellbeing, promoting sustainability and encouraging healthy habits.

Lower Sugar, Still Delicious
As part of our commitment to reducing sugar, we’ve adjusted our dessert offering at lunchtimes. Students will now enjoy a mix of fresh, nourishing options throughout the week:

  • Monday & Wednesday – Fresh cut fruit, yoghurt or jelly

  • Tuesday & Thursday – Homemade cake

  • Friday – Ice cream, perfect for warmer weather

We’ve also made small but meaningful changes behind the scenes:

  • Natural yoghurt will now be served without fruit compote

  • Our chocolate brownie now uses only cocoa powder, with over half the sugar removed

  • Afternoon tea cake has been replaced with fresh seasonal fruit

All our food is homemade, with no added sugar in any of our dishes.

Meat-Free Mondays
From Summer 2025, we’re introducing Meat-Free Mondays to promote sustainability. Many schools have already embraced this positive step, and by doing the same, we’re helping reduce our environmental impact while encouraging students to enjoy more plant-based, vegetable-rich meals.

Hydration Station – New This June
Staying hydrated is vital, especially during the summer. From June, we’re introducing a Hydration Station on the salad bar – a large glass dispenser of chilled water infused with fresh fruits and mint. Students can help themselves at lunchtime and enjoy the natural benefits, including:

  • Improved mood and energy

  • Better skin and digestion

  • Added vitamins, minerals and antioxidants

  • A refreshing alternative to sugary drinks

We’re proud to continue providing nutritious, balanced and environmentally conscious meals that support our students' health and the planet.
