The Governing Body is made up of independent members, including the Chair, and senior GEMS staff. It is responsible for the governance of all GEMS schools. Its responsibilities include:

Responsibility for central policies, particularly those relating to safeguarding and health and safety;

Oversight of the performance of each school and its staff; and appointment of the Head Master and any Deputies;

Advising the proprietor on all matters, including investment in the schools; oversight of school improvement plans and their implementation;

Each GEMS school has established a local school board. This board is the direct link with the GEMS Central Governing Body and its membership consists of the Head Teacher, the member of staff responsible for safeguarding, representatives of the staff and community and one of the members of the central governing body. GEMS Central Governing Body staff will attend as appropriate to support the school board. The school has first line responsibility for its policies and effectiveness. Ensure that school policies, particularly safeguarding, are consistent with central policies;

Agree the school’s improvement plan and monitor its implementation;

Consider all performance data for the school;
