Taking Stock

Following on from two wonderful newsletter introductions from Emilie and India, I am afraid it’s back to me this week! However, we are keen to involve more students in sharing their experiences and thoughts, or even parents. So, if you have a budding writer at home or wish to contribute yourself then please let us know by emailing l.porter@sherfieldschool.co.uk.

As we head into the final few weeks of an interesting, challenging yet extremely rewarding year at Sherfield, it is perhaps a good time to take stock and consider the year ahead. We are all acutely aware of the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic and this is so evident currently with the recurring debate about the future of schools and education as we approach a new academic year. It’s often difficult to navigate our way through the variety of considered opinions from ‘educational experts’ and politicians as they contest the re-opening of schools.

What does appear inevitable, is that we will need to be creative, flexible and innovative in our approach moving forward. We will need to be able to react in a dynamic manner to form constructive solutions and ensure that children are provided with the best possible educational experiences. Whilst the national debate continues, we will endeavour to do what is best for the community of Sherfield School. During the last two weeks, we have welcomed back children from Nursery to Year 6 and it has been a tremendous success. It has been wonderful to see children smiling, laughing and enjoying being back together within the Sherfield grounds. Next week, Year 10 and 12 students will be returning and although there will be many differences, such as social distancing, more regular handwashing and blended learning, they will be returning as a collective body and I’m sure will enjoy the interaction with their peers and teachers alike.

So, for September, we fully expect all of our students to be back in school full-time and any adjustments that are required will be made to ensure that our environment is safe, secure and the health and wellbeing of all is protected. We expect to return to full catering, a comprehensive co-curricular programme and a full educational programme. As we adjusted to the need to switch to an online delivery when lockdown began, we intend to be equally creative in adapting to a ‘new normal’ as required at the start of the Autumn term. As the lockdown continues to ease and advice and guidance evolves over the next couple of months, we will of course update you on any new developments at Sherfield as we prepare for the new year.

Once again, thank you for your continued support.
