YEAR 9At Sherfield
Step into Sherfield Senior School
Year 9 is more than just a year; it’s the start of an exciting new chapter at Sherfield Senior School. Here, students don’t just continue their education; they discover new passions, push boundaries, and begin shaping the people they will become.
From the moment you step through our doors, you’re part of a community where curiosity meets opportunity. Our exceptional teachers inspire learning that goes beyond textbooks, blending rigorous academic preparation with creativity, critical thinking, and real-world problem solving. Whether it’s preparing for GCSEs, exploring future career pathways, or aiming for the world’s top universities, our students are equipped to thrive every step of the way.
Joining Sherfield at Year 9 means stepping into a Senior School that celebrates diversity and ambition. Many pupils progress seamlessly from our Prep School, while others arrive from schools across the UK and around the globe. The mix of experiences, cultures, and perspectives enriches every classroom, every discussion, and every project, making learning here truly alive.
This is a place where every student is encouraged to excel, explore, and find their own voice. Year 9 marks the beginning of a journey filled with opportunities to grow academically, socially, and personally, surrounded by a supportive community that values individuality and achievement.
We can’t wait to show you what makes it extraordinary.

Step inside Sherfield and hear from the people who make it exceptional.
At our Discovery mornings, you'll meet the people behind the place. Instead of a formal presentation, you’ll join conversations with our students and staff. Hear their stories, ask your questions, and see our community in action.
After your conversations, enjoy a guided tour of our classrooms, facilities, and grounds before we gather back for a final discussion.

A Personalised Pathway to Success
At Sherfield, every pupil’s GCSE journey is designed around balance, wellbeing and ambition. From Year 9, we guide students towards choosing a tailored programme of between 6 and 11 GCSEs, ensuring each individual thrives without cognitive overload and remains fully engaged in every subject they study.

Core Strengths and Inspiring Choices
Beginning in Year 10, all pupils study the essential core subjects: English, Mathematics and Science — before selecting up to four additional option subjects that reflect their interests, talents and future goals.
Our flexible curriculum allows each student to build a programme that’s both challenging and rewarding, with pathways designed to develop curiosity, creativity and academic confidence.
Thoughtful Guidance and Ongoing Support
Throughout Year 10, students, parents and teachers work together to make key decisions such as:
- Choosing between foundation or higher exam tiers
- Selecting either Combined Science (two GCSEs) or Separate Sciences (three GCSEs)
Personal guidance is always available from Mr Bridges and Mrs Neville-Harris, who provide expert advice on subject combinations, workload balance and future aspirations.
Making the Right Choices
We encourage our pupils not to specialise too early, but instead to select complementary subjects that keep their future pathways open, whether towards A-Levels, university, or beyond.
At Sherfield, we help every learner design a GCSE journey that’s academically rigorous, personally fulfilling and fully supported.
Join Sherfield School in Year 9 and discover how we help every student build strong foundations for success.
