Head Girls Blog February 2018

    19 February 2018

On Monday morning before half-term, my tutor group gave an assembly on pursuing excellence. We spoke of our personal achievements and how as individuals we strive for excellence and a sense of achievement. I spoke about sailing, Alex about tennis and Billy about Xiangqi Chess and we all mentioned our journeys to reaching success. The key throughout our assembly was that we are striving to achieve excellence, not perfection and, as long as you try your hardest in what you do, you are pursuing that excellence whether it is academically, musically, in sport or other activities.

The Oliver! production last week showcased the talent in Sherfield that spans Years 7-13. Large audiences filled the Haymarket Theatre on both Wednesday and Thursday to watch the show and support those involved. It was refreshing to see more experienced actors and actresses sharing the stage with relatively new performers. I am hoping to pursue excellence through running. I loathe running and would do any other kind of exercise to avoid it however I am trying to prove something to myself by taking part in a large scale and lengthy event. Together with my parents and my sister I am running the Reading Half Marathon in March and am motivated by the cause that we are running for – Parkinson’s UK. This charity has become more known in my family in recent years as my Grandpa has vascular Parkinson’s and so this motivation is inspiring me to pursue excellence through completing the race and raising money.

In our school environment, excellence can be pursued in every aspect, from end of unit tests to public exams or school productions to sports matches. Excellence is not perfection, but, as we try our hardest, we are pursuing excellence and often success.
