Sherfield U11 v Thornegrove U13
Sherfield won by 50 runs
The boys from Years 5 and 6 sacrificed the opportunity to watch England in the World Cup on Wednesday and instead travelled to the other side of Newbury to play a match against Thorngrove School.
Sherfield batted first on a very hot afternoon and accumulated an impressive total of 97 from their 15 overs. Ben D hit a couple of great sixes in his sparkling innings of 24 and Will J cracked a few fours in his innings of 33. There was a good deal of sensible batting from the other boys and, overall, it was a very encouraging display.
Next it was the turn of Thorngrove to bat and they found it difficult to score against some very steady bowling and very tight fielding. The bowlers really kept up the pressure on the batsmen throughout, giving away very few extras, and the boys in the field were on their toes from the first ball till the last, pulling off some good catches and some great saves. Thorngrove finished their 15 overs on 47 which meant that Sherfield had won by 50 runs, a considerable margin of victory.
Congratulations to all the boys for a very competent and professional performance and thanks to Mr Lock for all his hard work.

ISA Athletics Competition
On Friday the PE department took 59 students from Year 4 to 10 to the ISA Athletics competition held at The Thames Valley Stadium, Eton. It was a long day for all that took part and we were very luckily with the weather as it held all day and in the end was the perfect weather for the event.
The Junior athletes were all very excited at the event and although they asked about 1000 times what time their event was at least they were all on time for the events unlike a couple of the senior team!!
The day started off with the hurdles in which we had Jonty D and Tom C competing and both of the boys did very well, especially Tom C, who had never done Hurdles before and still managed to finish 2nd in his heat. As he finished he was so happy, thumping the air - you would have thought he had won an Olympic medal!
All of the athletes went off to the respective events throughout the day and were coming back saying how they got on and also telling me how many medals they had won. As a school we walked away from the event with 7 bronze medals and 3 silver, which is an excellent achievement as this is the most that we have ever won as a school at this event.
I am unable at present to tell you who won which medals as we are still waiting for the final results to come through; however rest assured that as soon as the results are published I will let you know. What I can tell you thought is that 2 of the medals have gone to the junior school and that is the first time again that this has happened.
I would like to thank all of the pupils that came along on the day for the excellent behaviour and also a special mention goes to all of the senior pupils who supported the junior athletes and gave them help throughout the day.

U13 and U16 Basingstoke and Deane Tennis League
Sherfield U13’s 3 v 3 Costello U13’s
(Sherfield win on games won)
Sherfield U16’s 3 v 3 Costello U16’s
(Sherfield win on games won)
Sherfield began the tennis league with a tough challenge against a strong Costello team. The U13’s got off to a strong start with top seeds Sam B and Matt C winning their doubles encounter against Costello’s top seeded players. Due to timing issues the matches were reduced to first to four games, Sherfield winning this battle 4 – 1. In the other doubles match Tom M and James A just missed out on beating Costello losing 4 – 2. After a short break the singles matches started with number one seed Sam B winning his match 4 – 1, number two seed Matt C winning 4 – 2, number three seed James A lost 4 – 3 and number four seed Tom M lost 4 – 3. Though drawing the game on results, Sherfield managed to squeeze the victory by winning two more games than Costello. Great result against a tough opposition.
The U16’s had an equally tough encounter against Costello. Once again the match started with the doubles. Top seeds Ali O and Eliot S started against two very tough opponents but managed to take the victory by 4 – 2. Unfortunately Callum R and James N did not fare as well losing 4 – 2 in their doubles match. On to the singles matches where top seed Ali O brushed aside the challenge of Costello’s top seed winning comfortably 4 – 1. Eliot S also playing very well was too strong in his match winning 4 – 1 as well. James N played well against Costello’s third seed but just fell short losing 4 – 3 in the final game. Callum R went the same way as James losing 4 – 3 in his game as well. However with James and Callum putting in good performances Sherfield drew the match but won overall by taking four more games than the opposition. This was an excellent start for Sherfield. Well done to all of the boys.

U13 and U16 Basingstoke and Deane Tennis League
Sherfield U13’s 6 v 0 The Vyne U13’s
Sherfield U16’s 5 v 1 The Vyne U16’s
Sherfield began this game with a lot of confidence after the first round of matches against Costello. The U13’s began the games with top seeds Sam B and Matt C in action against the Vyne’s top seeds. This proved to be a tense game but Sam and Matt were just too strong and won 6 – 2. Second seeds Raheem M and James A played very well and totally dominated their game crushing the opposition 6 – 0. Moving on to the singles number one seed Sam B had another tough game but again the consistency in Sam’s game proved to be the difference as he won 6 – 3. Second seed Matt C cruised to a 6 – 0 victory, Raheem M Sherfield’s third seed also won 6 – 0, with James A rounding off a very dominant Sherfield performance with a 6 – 0 win. Sherfield took the match 6 – 0 and proved just too strong for a battling Vyne team.
Seeing the U13’s dominate put a little pressure on the U16’s. Ali O and Eliot S looked unfazed though as they demolished the Vyne’s top seeds 6 – 0 in the opening game. The second seeds James and Callum had a tougher game but again proved too strong by winning 6 – 2. The singles games followed suit with Ali O once again looking imperious against the Vyne’s top seed winning 6 – 0. Eliot S also strolled to victory with a 6 – 1 victory against the number two seed. Callum R played well again to beat the number three seed 6 – 2. Unfortunately a very close match did not go James N way as he fell to a 6 – 4 loss in the last game. Despite this defeat Sherfield U16’s looked in excellent form and looking forward to the next match against Aldworth.

U16 Basingstoke and Deane Tennis League
Sherfield U16’s 6 v 0 Aldworth U16’s
The U16’s were looking to continue their excellent form by beating Aldworth on a warm Wednesday afternoon. The match started as ever with the doubles. Top seeds Ali O and Eliot S performed very well again proving far too strong for the opposition winning 6 – 0. The second seeds Sam B and James N also played well only conceding the one game, winning 6 – 1. This put Sherfield in a very strong position going in to the singles. Top seed Ali O made light work of Aldworth’s top seed dispatching him 6 – 0. Second seed Eliot S had an awkward test but managed to see off his opponent winning 6 – 2. Third seed Sam B won his singles game convincingly 6 – 0 as did Sherfield’s number four seed James N with his first victory of the season. Well done to all four boys who played.

Rounders
Monday 21st June 2010
Year 7 Rounders Tournament
Yesterday the Year 7 girls had their Rounders tournament which they were all looking forward to. We arrived and found out who was in our pool and I was quietly confident with the group stages. Our 1st match was against Everest and the girls decided to field first. We were able to hold Everest to only 5 Rounders, as our fielding skills were excellent especially between Jasmine J, Georgie S and Talulla C. Then it was our turn to bat and Talulla opened the batting with a good solid Rounder. The rest of the team followed and with some dodgy fielding from Everest we were able to gain some very sneaky Rounders. The game finished with a Sherfield win, 8.5 – 5.
Next up was Testbourne. We had watched their previous game and they looked a strong fielding side. We started well, however their combination of bowler, backstop and first base was outstanding and unfortunately for us we were unable to compete with this as our batting team was reduced very quickly and we final found ourselves with only Talulla C left in to bat. Talulla C gave it her best shot but was unable to score the rounders and therefore we were all bowled out. As Testbourne took the bat, we knew that we would need to be very alert to keep them from scoring many Rounders. However, Sherfield seemed to have a little sleep half way through this innings and gave away 5.5 rounder’s which meant we lost the game.
So far we had won 1 and lost won and found ourselves on 4 points.
The Vyne were our next opponents and having beaten them the week before I think the girls went into the game with the wrong attitude. The Vyne had clearly been practising and with some excellent tactical decisions had moved their players around and Sherfield found this difficult to compete against. The Vyne opened the batting, and although we were playing well, we again decided to sleep during the game and gave them 6.5 rounders. In our batting we scored some very nice Rounders from Rutendo M, however with the Vyne finding their feet, we were only able to score 6 rounder’s and therefore lost the match by half a rounder.
We had one match to play, and after a few choice words from myself about the lack of concentration and also the attitude towards the game the girls went into the Costello match with the attitude of “let’s prove Miss Sheppard wrong”. Again we fielded 1st and were able to hold Costello to 6 rounders. This was a good innings for us as we knew we could score more than that although we had to keep it together. We didn’t have the best of starts in the innings and it looked like Costello, who were a strong team would hold us. However, all of a sudden Costello fell apart and started throwing the ball at each other and ended up injuring 3 of their team. However, the Sherfield girls held it together and were able to capitalise on the poor fielding and showed that they could play rounders. At the end of the game, Sherfield had won 8.5 – 6 rounders. I was pleased with the girls for the final innings and the way that they did prove me wrong.
