Sherfield has now gained the status of World School and will be offering the International Baccalaureate Diploma programme to Sixth Form students from September 2010. We are convinced that the International Baccalaureate provides a broader and more coherent alternative to the A-Level curriculum. We also believe that it is a better preparation for university providing a highly marketable qualification within the increasingly international workplace of the future.
The IB is accepted for university entry in the UK and world-wide. In fact, many universities now favour IB applicants above A-Level applicants considering them to be better prepared for study at a higher level. In the current UCAS Guide to University Entry, all universities describe typical offers based on the IB alongside those made for A-Levels.
Students from local schools may transfer to Sherfield after successfully completing their GCSEs elsewhere. We also welcome students who have been educated within the educational systems of other countries.
The IB programme allows all the specialisms usually catered for within A-Levels but maintains, at the same time, a breadth which many students, potential employers and universities will find particularly appealing.
Sherfield offers an impressive range of co-curricular activities including a wide variety of sport, music, art and drama activities as well as other extra-curricular activities (e.g. the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme, community service etc.). Students taking part in the IB Diploma will be able to gain credit for their participation in these and other activities as they will count towards the community service (CAS) element of the course. We believe that with our outstanding tutoring system, excellent level of careers advice and superb pastoral care, we are well prepared to successfully deliver the IB Diploma Programme at Sherfield.
