At Sherfield we define Home Economics as the study of lifestyle management and it currently includes Food and Nutrition. Home Economics has a place within Enrichment which is at the core of our school.
Our home is the Delft Kitchen, named after the 17 century Delft Tiles that can still be seen on the walls in the kitchen. It has been designed and equipped to a very high standard and provides an excellent teaching space with 8 work stations.
Food and Nutrition is part of the curriculum from Year 3 to Year 11.

Year 8 |
For years 3,4,5 and 6 our aim is to teach our pupils how to choose, cook and eat safe and healthy food. We teach the pupils basic cooking skills, they learn to choose ingredients and appropriate equipment. In year 6 we relate dishes cooked to the ‘Eatwell Plate’ (formerly known as the Balanced Plate).
As part of the Enrichment Programme most pupils in year 3 to 6 take part in half a term of ‘Decorating Food’ where pupils learn the basic piping skills.

Pupils study ‘Healthy Day’ and Pasta Mania. They develop basic culinary skills e.g. using a sharp knife, different electrical equipment, making basic sauces. Pupils learn about the five food groups and what constitutes a healthy diet, using the ‘Eatwell Plate’ and our own hands as a guide to portion size.
|
Pupils learn about the problem of food waste and ways to reduce this. They learn how to store food correctly to minimise food waste and about rechauffe cooking. They learn about the four basic methods of making baked goods and biscuits. There is an emphasis on Kitchen Chemistry..what happens to the ingredients when we make a cake?’ |
Pupils study a Healthy Life, learning about diet through life and the sources and role of key nutrients. Emphasis is on the diets of young people aged 14 to 18. The learn about why we cook food and the different methods of cooking food and the science behind those methods. Pupils cook dishes using the different cooking methods and rich in different nutrients. |
