As maths teachers within Sherfield, our aim is to nurture our pupils’ inherent curiosity and fascination with the world and help them to retain it. We hope that through our teaching, pupils will share some of the joy of a mathematical journey and we will prove that it is a subject that is both exciting and wondrous.
We are extremely enthusiastic about our subject, and it is one of the most popular subjects at A-level. Many students who elect to take further mathematics at A-level continue their mathematical careers into university.
Maths is the study of numbers, quantities and measures, shapes, patterns and space, and for the vast majority of people it is accessible only if it can be understood in a familiar context. Hence we teach by starting with examples in the real world that touch people’s lives, connecting our core values to the national curriculum. Maths also provides the means for creating new and imaginative worlds to explore, and it is through this that new mathematical ideas are created and current concepts are modified and extended.
We realise that there are some for whom this is not the easiest of subjects. We are always around to respond to questions and are prepared to discuss "I don’t understand this” in a supportive and sympathetic way.
